Central Catholic Competes in Cardinal Division CHSL Track & Field Championship

The Central Catholic boys’ and girls’ track & field teams competed at the Cardinal Division Catholic High School League Championship on Friday at Macomb Lutheran North High School.

The boys’ squad finished 3rd among 6 schools with 117 points, while the girls’ team placed 5th among 7 schools with 72 points. Host Lutheran North won the boys’ team title with 169 points, while Fr. Gabriel Richard captured the girls’ team championship with 143.5 points.

The Fighting Irish boys’ team secured 6 1st-place finishes (4 individuals, 2 relays) at the 1-day meet, while the girls’ squad captured the top spot in 4 events (4 individuals).

On the boys’ side, senior Jerry Barnes and junior Victor Singleton, Jr. successfully defended their 1st-place finishes in the 800-meter dash (2:04.08) and long jump (20-6.25), respectively.

Also registering 1st-place finishes for the boys’ team in individual events were sophomore Jeremiah Fuller in the 100-meter dash (11.24) and sophomore Keith Cosper in the 300-meter hurdles (41.69).

In the relays, the quartet of junior Ian Smith, Jr., Fuller, junior Jerome Davis V, and senior Anthony Lawrence, Jr. outsprinted the competition in the 4x100-meter (1:29.72), while Smith, sophomore Cle’ondre Davis, Davis, and Lawrence finished 1st in the 4x400-meter (3:31.18).

On the girls’ side, senior Nyla King repeated as champion in the 100-meter (11.82), 200-meter (24.67), and 400-meter dash (55.41), while classmate Aaliyah McClure tallied the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles (48.70) for the 2nd-straight year.

The Fighting Irish will return to the track for the Division II OHSAA District Championship on the week of May 19-24.
