“This was a research-based science expo rather than an experiment-based science fair,” said Kim Bremer, science teacher and department chair.  “The students came up with their own topic and then researched articles and scientific studies about the topic.  We like them to pick topics that they are interested in.  They learn how to do research and write papers, and then they can answer their own questions.  The judges graded them on the topic they researched, how thoroughly they researched the subject, and their interview.  This is all meant to prepare them for college and is something that will help them out in the world.”

We appreciate Central Catholic’s AP science students and the following alumni and community representatives who acted as judges for the projects:

  • Jim Baun, Class of 1971 - medical sciences professor

  • Terry Brassell - alumni parent, retired church organ designer/installer and organist

  • Rick Briggle - former CCHS science teacher

  • Julie Craig-Schabel, Class of 1974 - science teacher

  • Tim Eckstein, Class of 1967 - medical director

  • Dr. Joe Lach - general surgeon

  • Luis Mata and Yuan Tang - engineering professors from the University of Toledo

  • Dave Nichols, Class of 1991 - Principal of St. Joseph’s Maumee

  • Ron Patton, Class of 1969 - finance

  • Dennis Radecki, Class of 1975 - pharmacist

  • Margaret Shriner-Eagle, Class of 1974 - nurse

  • Trig Simon, Class of 1962 - furniture maker and videographer

  • Treasure Sucheck - Mercy College

  • Thomas Swiergosz, Class of 1970 - UTMC

“I have been a judge for previous fairs at Central Catholic and at other schools as well,” said Terry Brassell.  “The CCHS student displays were very impressive, and I truly enjoyed speaking with each of the participants.  My wife, Kathy (Bishop) Brassell ’76, is the chief costume designer and seamstress for the CCHS musicals and has served in that role for many years.  Prior to my retirement, I assisted with construction of sets for many of the musicals.  We both enjoy serving CCHS and pray that those who currently attend Central Catholic will support the school in the future with their time, talent, and treasure.”
